Accessibility
Many people use the web differently than you might assume at first glance. They navigate with a keyboard, have pages read aloud, enlarge the text or see colors differently. We build websites that work for everyone, and we plan for accessibility from the very first draft.
01
What you get
- A website that follows the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) at level AA
- Full keyboard operation with a visible focus indicator
- A clean structure for screen readers, with headings, landmarks and labeled forms
- Sufficient color contrast and readable font sizes
- Support for user preferences, for example reduced motion
- Help with the accessibility statement for your website
02
How we work
Accessibility starts in the design. Already in the draft, we check contrast, font sizes and a clear order of content. In development, we use semantic HTML and build every component so it works without a mouse.
We test with automated tools and by hand, for example with a keyboard and a screen reader. Automated tests only find some of the possible issues. That’s why manual testing is always part of the process.
We can also review existing websites. In 2025, we carried out an accessibility review of an entire website for a medical practice.
03
The European Accessibility Act
The European Accessibility Act is an EU directive that requires certain companies to make their products and services accessible. In Germany, it’s implemented by the Barrierefreiheitsstärkungsgesetz (BFSG), which has applied since June 28, 2025.
For websites, the key point is that the law covers e-commerce services. These include, for example, online shops and websites where consumers enter into contracts, such as bookings or orders. Other areas include banking services, e-books and certain passenger transport services.
Some questions come up often:
- Microenterprises are exempt from the requirements for services. These are companies with fewer than ten employees and an annual turnover or annual balance sheet total of no more than €2 million.
- Purely informational websites without contract conclusion are in many cases not covered by the law. Accessibility is still worth it, because it reaches more people.
- As a benchmark, the European standard EN 301 549 applies in practice. For websites, it refers to the WCAG.
- Compliance is monitored by the market surveillance authorities of the German federal states. Violations can lead to orders and fines.
Whether and to what extent the European Accessibility Act applies to your business depends on the individual case. We build your website so it meets the common technical requirements. We can’t and aren’t allowed to provide legal advice. For a binding assessment, please contact a lawyer or your chamber of commerce.
04
What this means for you
Your website reaches more people, including older people and people with disabilities. Clear structures also help every visitor, and search engines too. If the European Accessibility Act applies to you, an accessibly built website gives you a solid technical foundation.
05
Typical deliverables
An accessibly designed and developed website
A test report with the results of automated and manual testing
A draft accessibility statement
Tips on keeping your content accessible in the CMS, for example with alt text for images
FAQ
Frequently asked questions
Does the European Accessibility Act apply to my website?
That depends on what your website offers and how large your business is. The points above give you a first orientation. Only legal counsel can give you a binding answer.
Can you review my existing website?
Yes. After a quick first look at your website, we quote you a fixed price for the review. We review your website with automated tools and by hand and summarize the results in plain language. Afterwards, we discuss which issues can be fixed and whether a relaunch makes more sense.
Will my website stay accessible when I edit content myself?
The technology stays accessible. The content depends on you, for example alt text for images or a logical order of headings. We show you how in the training, and the CMS is set up to support you with it.
